Maupassant is one of the greatest French writers. He is called the father of modern short stories. He has realistically depicted the peasants of Normandy- their living conditions and sentiments. The Franco-Prussian War is depicted with such subtlety and detail that it seems to be happening before our eyes. In just 12 years of creative life, Mopaza composed 300 stories and many novels. Some of his best stories are collected in this collection.
